Reading the daily digests distributed by Everquest Widows has become as compelling as the game itself.

This morning, one participant asked about the possibility of hiring a virtual assassin to eliminate an addicted spouse's character."Could some super expert EQ player make another player's in-game life a living hell, where this one player keeps killing the other player?" asked the participant.

Other members of the mailing list chimed in to note that this would be impossible because most servers make it impossible for players to kill other players. Even on the player vs. player (PVP) servers, it is likely that Verant would intervene to stop such behavior. Another respondent warned against deleting an addict's character or "playing havoc with their virtual world."

Some of these testimonials are deeply touching, and it is clear that some people have abandoned the real world in favor of the game. Yet I am skeptical of those who suggest that MMORPG's are uniquely addictive. I know couples who watch between twenty and thirty hours of television each week. Why is addiction to television considered to be more socially acceptable? Is it because it is a shared addiction?

Yes, shared experience, but also less work? I mean when was the last time that you really had to interact with it besides yelling at it in an outrage during a news cast...or crying when they show you a sad story. I gues what am getting at is, it si too much work to play the game...you know...what if the other partner is just "lazy"

Addictions

Everyone has an "addiction" in one form or another. If not handled properly, and in moderation, addcitions usually get out of control.

Someone who has lost control with an addiction, no matter what it is, -- drugs, alcohol, eating, online video games -- needs help. They don't need people plotting to "kill" their characters over and over. They don't need complaints, they need understanding, patience, etc.

If the addiction runs that deep, then counseling is the next logical step. Of course, many find being "addicted" to a video game argumentative. Is it an addiction? Or is it just a concentrated involvement into the game?

Is the father who golfs every single day, even in the rain, spending hours on the golf course "addicted" to the game? Possibly. Is it out of control? Most likely not. Some "addictions" can be handled effectively. Some cannot. Sometimes it takes both parties involved to realize -- or not realize -- when an addiction is out of control.

Of course, addictions to drugs, alcohol, eating, sex, etc, are dangerous. Those addictions need to be handled immediately. If there are probable signs of a bad addiction, help is needed immediately. Not next week or next month, right now. Same thing with a video game addiction. If someone you truly care about is addicted (i.e. ignores chores, spouse, children, bills), or you think they may have a problem with it, then get help. Complaining about it on an anti-gaming site won't help. If the addiction was something more of a hazard to one's physical health, I'm sure there wouldn't be any posting on the internet of loved one's asking if someone can "assassinate" all of the bar owners in the area. Of course, the internet is a strange place, and people aren't wrapped too tightly anymore...

I have been playing EverQuest for almost three years now. Am I addicted? Sure am. I enjoy it. Do I ignore reality in favor of it? No. I can't. Reality will always be there, and it needs more attention than fantasy does. The world doesn't stop because you are raiding Temple of Veeshan, Vex Thal, or Solusek Ro's Tower.

Off topic: This is by far the most interesting course I have ever seen. I would love to take a course like this if it was available in my area. What an excellent idea. Keep up the adventuring! It's a large polygonal world out there!
