This clip demonstrates a phenomenon known as "inattention blindness." In an excellent discussion in their book Mind Hacks, Stafford and Webb explain that the limited capacity of our visual short term memory (VSTM) is the culprit. As we concentrate on the ball and the people dressed in white, we "discard information about slow-moving objects, especially those colored black -- like the gorilla."
